The first Annual Meeting of the Town of Three Lakes was on April 6, 1886. It was actually the Town of Gagen, in Forest County at that time, and included the Village of Three Lakes and the Village of Monico. The Town meetings where frequently held at the Three Lakes “Lock-Up”

The region what is know today as Three Lakes was part of the Military Road connecting Chicago to points north during the Civil War.

In 1881 the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad surveyors were frustrated with the lack of a straight line through this area. In each direction the surveyors would encounter yet one more lake in this chain of 27 lakes, blocking their routes northward toward Eagle River. The area at the center of Maple Lake, Town Line Lake and Range Line Lake became the hub for the region.

The completion of the railroad ushered in the rapid development as a logging community. The virgin timber supplies were harvested with the bountiful pine and hardwood forests that were found here.

Once the logging era moved on, Three Lakes was known as an agricultural community, where potato farms were bountiful. Potato warehouses and the potato production expanded so that Wisconsin’s first County Agricultural Agent was located here.

In the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps was put to work in this region replanting forests where the virgin timber once stood, creating the seeds to the lovely northwoods that cover the area and have created the natural beauty for which this part of Wisconsin is known so well.

From 1989 - 1999 the Wisconsin Conservation Corps continued the replanting of thousands of trees that had been logged off.

Three Lakes has evolved into a four season tourism recreation area and has become home to many year-long residents who appreciate the lifestyle, the natural resources and the friendly welcoming demeanor of the people in the north woods..
